Yea, for that example you would need both the scare and animate hinge spells memorised; I confess (it was over 2 years ago) I cant quite recall how it gives you the option to cast fear, but I did try the combinations out and they did work.

One thing not mentioned is the wizardy prestige classes; I briefly tried out the High Mage in beta, and it looks a nice PrC. A rather narrow definition of success to just count levels, the likes of Hroin and Sagi are wonderfully memorable and interesting characters, and a lack of dungeon time can be as much a reflection of player availability as anything else.
