A Shadow's Conniption

Postby Aschent » Fri Jan 06, 2017 4:39 am

"This is the end." *The man thought to himself, slowly dragging his beaten body through a soggy patch of earth, remnants of grass and plant strewn about. He was crawling, for what seemed like an eternity. He dared to glance up, only one, the little vision he had left allowed him to view the top of a hill, one he had known well. He knew the city just beyond. He knew the tales, the horrors, it had endured.*

"Is this it!?" *The question was as sharp as they come, yet somehow a softness was birthed from the woman's lips.*

*The man again looked up to the woman, her black boots remained spotless despite the journey, accompanied by a myriad of pockets and etchings on her pants.. He tried to muster the strength to see her face, he attempted to look up, and endured the coming consequence. A club came down hard to the back of his knee, rendering the leg completely broken and worthless. The man screamed out in pain, it was too much.*

"...long...and... strong..." *He began to recite.*

"Get the fool up!" *She shouted. The man instantly felt himself being lifted, he could see her now. Yet he couldn't. She stood there in front of him, lithe and frail. Her face masked behind a dark cowl, with raven black hair seeping through the front on both sides.*

"The city appears to be as you claimed. Now confirm it." *Her voice calmed, awaiting a response.*

"...as Daern's...." *His breath gave out. He hadn't felt steel before, not in this way. His strength had given out and his head drooped and gaze went down. Now he could see the dagger emerging from his ribs.*

"Know this, we can break you, or break your secret family as well. Now do as we have instructed you."

*The man's thoughts went back to the farm and the family he had gone out of his way to protect. He had given everything to keep them safe. Now visions of their deaths danced in his head. Fear now became his motivation.*

"Yes..." *His word came with a feeling of defeat, no attempt to recite, no prayer, nothing.*

"See? That wasn't so difficult, was it?" *He could hear the smirk when she said it. The blade left his torso and he collapsed, from there his consciousness began to fade.*

*He heard the woman mount her steed, he heard some soft instructions, he could feel someone near him and what sounded like a lullaby being whispered over him, he could feel the flame ignite, engulfing him, he could feel... nothing.*
