Of shipwrecks and dead men

Postby Highlander » Mon Jan 16, 2017 8:44 pm

With the demonic episode fading, in time if not in memory, Lori turned her thoughts back to what had seemed like a chance encounter some time ago. A bumbling fool on the beach, his companions dead at her command, had told some tantalising things of the Sea Slicer, shown her the wreck and its hanging tapestry of bodies. A name, finally, to put to the Blackraven's vessel, and to the captain himself, wherever he now was. Sarshall was less welcoming of late, perhaps he had moved on...or back to the remote beach and his treasures. She asked Perry to make some "enquiries" around the docks, to see if anyone by the captain's given description had been seen trying to hire crew, or a ship. Whatever the results of those enquiries, she began to think of the journey back to the beach, and who she would need - or want - with her. Fenneken knew already, and she was the key to unlocking more information from what remained of the Sea Slicer's crew. Protection was paramount, as something had done that to a whole ship's company - a couple of arcanists would likely meet the same fate. Jonan, probably, and Ornak for combined muscle. Perry too, as she needed to see inside those chests...but on flicking her spellbook, she browsed over the Recludam Portis...she could most likely handle the locks without Perry's help. Artemis? A regretful frown..perhaps not this time, dear friend....or perhaps.

Perry's Inquiries

After Lori’s request, Perry took some time to ponder a method of finding out the information she requested. He had some contacts on the docks with the various merchants. There was regular correspondence back and forth from his family’s business in Raven’s Bluff and Sarshell. There were also regular shipments made from those docks. Chests that he made sent to be sold. Unusual gems or trinkets sent to Raven’s Bluff where there was a greater market. In return, the family sent raw materials of rare woods not obtainable in the area. The occasional scroll would also arrive carefully hidden and protected in with the other items that came in on the docks.

With that in mind, he asked around a few of the dock hands he had met. He took a few out for a drink at either the Kingfisher or the Belle depending on their preferences in life. While making arrangements for his next shipment, Perry would speak to the Port Master about ships in the area for hire. If asked, he would state simply he was thinking of combining a shipment or two home along with a trip for himself and possible some consignment cargo. He said of course, he would need a ship’s captain and asked about who might be available.

In addition, and much more carefully and quietly, Perry would slip a few coins to those that lived more in the shadows of the docks that he was seeking information. He wouldn’t say why but gave the impression if was for mutual profit and let it go at that.

In Vlasta Lori manages to find Fenneken easily enough and it is just as easy that the sorceress her assistance is provided. She asks a tenday before making the journey back to Sarshel again. As for her Fenneken her preparation; A good rest before embarking on the misssion to the shore should suffice for her.

Perry Quietfoot's inquiries upon the docks prove to be less than profitable. The city is still in a mending phase, and that includes its economic fragility. Merchants are quickly made suspicious by perceived half-truths and deceits that the Halfling makes, claiming that his inquiries follow the sentiment of deliveries between him and his family. Concerns arise that the entrepreneur might be expanding his business beyond the miscellany he sells on 5 Shield Lane, and their conversations with him effortfully attempt to conceal economic weakness or opportunity. Of things pertaining to Lori Peveril's situation, there is no progress made in this way. As for the dock hands? They are not overly interested in taking time out of their day, and even drinks purchased at The Kingfisher after-shift on their behalf only loosen their tongues to speak fanciful tales about the wrath of The Bitch Queen, and the strange arrival of The Proserpine in the city.

The city's underbelly is gutted following the mass exodus from the city. As people are returning, so too are shadier practices, but the city guard has cracked down upon much of the sustained criminality in Sarshel, and down the narrow alleyways of Sarshel, Perry Quietfoot can locate few potential allies. Those shady figures with whom the Halfling successfully does make contact are not convinced by vague allusions to mutual profit, and divulge nothing.

After Perry's inquiries draw nothing out, Lori spends a few days in the vicinity of the Kingfisher and the Sailors Star herself, watching the patrons of each establishment from behind a book and glass of wine. In the meanwhile, she makes final preparations for the trip south, and arranges with Jonan, Fenneken and Perry that they should gather at Shield Lane. Once gathered, she explains some of the circumstance of the journey - a shipwreck has been found, with most of its crew slain, but with enough information gathered from one of the survivors to indicate that it is the wreck of a pirate vessel, specifically one which attacked her family's ship several years past. The captain still lives, and with other enquiries not proving fruitful, Lori states that she wishes to use Fenneken's "abilities" to find out more information about him. Jonan and Perry are invited along for protection, and lockpicking respectively, as there remains some of the ship's treasure which would be shared among those who helped. The main business at the ship would no doubt be unpleasant...backs could be turned, and tongues kept still of what may transpire there. The task explained, and if accepted, the group departs the city one cold dawn south along the Royal Road.

It shall be fairly easy to locate Fenneken in Sarshel these days. For the present she does not seem interested in any treasure whatsoever. It is likely that the only motivation for the sorceress is to simply help out a friend, but perhaps there is more for her. When the day comes that the company sets out it may look like Fenneken has not made any special preparation, but she will be well-rested.

The sea is yet to be recorded as an elusive mistress: she tends always to be found wherever the land is not, and as such it is not with difficulty but only duration of time that Lori Peveril's party find their way to Filur, and thereafter to the coast. If the region of Vlasta were to be taken for its own geographical extreme: rocky, coniferous, and forever bouncing up in hilly indecisions from the convenience of a plateau, then Filur were his counterpart - 'his', 'tis thought, for Vlasta's surrounds have nothing of a maidenly quality about them to warrant rightful titling. The way from Filur is a tangle of vegetation, surely, where verdant determination makes a mockery of the wintry months that plagued Impiltur for so long. Otherwise though it is a pleasant change of pace, unperturbed by hill, cave and Goblin treachery. Soon, the air from The Easting Reach can be caught in the nostrils, lifting past the tall cliffs of Bard-poetry that distinguish measurable Impiltur from a body of water that requests no boundary to be placed upon it.

Descending onto the sand, there is no disturbance to be felt as Lori Peveril directs her party towards The Sea Slicer. 'Tis surely the finest headstone in a graveyard of ships; a forest of masts that mark the doom of many a man. If Lori expected to meet a man here, he had not put the same appointment on his calendar. Could be that those winged witches of whom she was told have finished their work with the inhabitants of The Sea Slicer. Maybe something else befell him?

Regardless, time has passed enough to jeopardise the simple man's unbecoming vigil at The Sea Slicer. It is quiet now, and being of an affected mental state as the simple man was, he was perhaps not the finest source for information anyway. What happens now?

The party stood by the Sea Slicer's ruin, a chill wind whipping off the sea making the remnants of the rigging and sails flap in the wind, the sound of the dead ship echoing and mingling with the ever present surf and calling of the gulls. The gulls, no doubt, would have eaten well of the macabre decorations dangling from the masts; the crew feeding the wild creatures of the ocean's edge would have pleased a maritime druid, had any been present. No such philiosophy troubled Lori, however - not today anyway, this was a perilous place, and their tasks were to be seen to with as much haste as thoroughness would allow.

She was unsurprised at the absence of the man, and cared little for his fate, other than to wonder for a moment if he could have made things more difficult...should she have displayed a bit more callousness, and added him to the tally of the Sea Slicer's dead? She had not, however, and his fate and actions remained unknown. It was not him she had come to see though, and keeping a standing instruction to Jonan to keep an eye on the sky for anything larger than a gull, the first destination was to head for the beach where she had encountered those unfortunate crew members those weeks ago. There had been treasure chests there, and that was the first thing to check - were they still there? If so, Lori would instruct Perry to do what he did best with the locks, and some investigation of the contents would occur.

Whether the chests were there or not, the party would return sooner, or later, to the shipwreck; Lori scanned the bodies dangling from the masts, seeking one who would appear a bit better dressed, as far as that could be determined from the rags flapping in the wind. A body that would appear to belong to one of the crew wiho may have been able to talk with more knowledge than that possessed by a simple deck hand, if he were still alive. Perhaps he could be made to talk still, hence Fenneken's presence. Any such body being identified, Lori would ask for it to be brought down from the mast, and would allow Fenneken to make what preparations she needed to call on the man's spirit. Lori had questions - where had the captain gone? What were his plans? How did the ship come to this fate? A lingering doubt sat over her as she considered whether to find if any recollection of the Aurora could be wrung from beyond the grave...perhaps, she would see how things proceeded before going down that route.

From the beginning of their journey to the south Fenneken is more quiet and seemingly absent-minded than usual. She does not speak much and the others may assume she is day dreaming or actually under the effects of some kind of a hangover. In truth Fenneken is saving her energy and she also may still feel some effect from the relaxing drug she smoked the evening prior to the departure. On the road she would verify the questions that Lori wishes to ask and accept corrections if necessary. If the other companions directed any questions at her that she did not deem worth the effort of replying she simply ignored them or shrugged lightly and moved on.

Upon arriving at the open-air tomb that the Sea Slicer became Fenneken emphasizes that Jonan and Perry should not disturb her or any spirits that may materialize for their eyes. The only exception being when their lifes are in danger. Her cold tone and sudden sharp glare tell them she means serious business. The consequences may well be unpleasant when they shall interrupt. Apparently she has higher expectations of Lori. The suggestion is made that Lori stays at some distance from Fenneken, but she may be closer than the others. Also, if the wizardess wishes, she may add other questions when there will be an interrogation.

As Lori orders to bring down one of the better-dressed skeletal remains Fenneken does not pay it special attention. She breathes slowly and deeply while sauntering about the beach in front of the Sea Slicer. To the others it would seem her direction is random and it is hard to make sense of the slow flexing of he fingers that Fenneken does. The spirit caller closes her eyes slowly and her focus drifts off from what is happening around her in the world of the living. Instead she attempts to sense if spirits are present and she would first listen to them as well as gauge their strength, willingness to communicate and potential for a useful source of information for Lori. The one skeleton that is brought down and layed out on the beach is the first to be examined in this way.

Only upon deciding to whom the questions shall be directed she moves over to a specific spot and comes to a stand still. With a sharp wrist motion she beckons Lori to come somewhat closer. Then Fenneken communicates with it in barely audible whispers. Her lips moving only in the slightest. Meanwhile fingering a small gem that she holds in a pocket. It is a black pearl, a gem prized by pirates, amongst others. For now this trump card is not revealed yet and who knows it shall be necessary at all. For now it is unsure for them, but also for Fenneken, how much information can be gathered in this way.
