Sunsong Spire - The Search

Postby OldBear » Mon Mar 13, 2017 7:57 pm

For the past ten day or so Westin has been at Sunsong Spire. He had been there while Brother Kaleb was tending to Lady Artemis. During that time he was busy unpacking supplies and keeping an eye on things in the area. Now that he had seen for himself that the priestess was well and appeared mostly healed, he had returned to the quiet solitude of the shrine.

Most of his time has been spent at simple tasks such as sweeping the long narrow steps up to the shrine itself. Or spending the day weeding around a grave site and moving and stacking rock that blocks the doorway to a building on the grounds. Some of the stones have proven to large for him to move, so he had journeyed back to Outentown to purchase a rock chisel and hammer.

During the evenings he and Brother Kaleb would discuss their studies, their lives before the temple and other ordinary matters. And of course, there were meals to make, dishes to wash and fire wood to be cut, split and stacked. It has proven to be a time of renewal for Westin as well as a time for quiet prayers and reflections. After the horrors of the demon prince and some of his other battles, it was one his soul sorely needed.

On other days, Westin followed up on his earlier exploring. Only now he would pack food and water and would spend the entire day and once two days out wandering the lands around the shrine. He would use this time to learn the various paths to the shrine and couldn’t help but wonder who had owned the nearby estate and what had happened there to destroy it. There was much to know of this land around the shrine if he was to not fail in his duties to protect it.

His time at the shrine also gave him the chance to catch up on correspondence that he had received. Some evenings he would sit in the candle light and write to some of his companions from the academy and to the Abbot there. The one he often though of his second father and his advisor in matters personal and spiritual.

Dead End

It does not take effort for one who spends a morning looking out from the Sunsong Spire to appreciate the beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see. At dawn, the tall pines of the sloping lowlands hugging the foothills of the mountains that would form the cradle around which Lake Vlasta sits, is caressed gently by all the golden fingers of Lathander's singular hand - the drawing back of the curtain that separates the dream-filled nightworld to welcome those who arise and awake with vigorous purpose. It is a sea of such gently swaying pines and firs that cover the valley north from the Spire, where the wind sweeps in often in great gusts; a cold wind that comes from the Uplands of Damara that stirs the needles to restlessness as it crosses the mist-filled valley that lies between the vast cliffs of the Spire and the rest of Impiltur, separated only by the Angelus Bridge. Lathander's touch is soft at these quiet hours of morning, but it is certainly not weak in its intensity. Each day it passes over the ancient pillars that stand like sentinels around the shrine, their lichen-covered glyphs gleam subtly beneath what it has surrendered to age and to nature.

It becomes clear to Westin Highridge that the lush land around the Spire is vast - covering a distance of roughly three country manor estates, but where the Morninglord might have staked claim on the land, there was nothing to mark a beginning or an end: Did not the land owe itself to the supremacy of the sun? Such were the idle musings that had the young Lathanderite disciple reflecting upon as he went about his duties.

The locals who come forward to share their knowledge of the estate ruins near the Spire are those who hold thaedars in the arable lands in the distance that spans the Laviguer Road to where it joins the Royal Road into the city of Sarshel. They speak of a name, and one name only - Demeter, for as long as they have lived they have known it to be called such. Demeter is spoken with hesitance, an uncertainty.. even the name itself sounds wholly strange, for it is not an Impilturan one whether by first or last. It is with hushed superstition that reaches Westin's ears of Demeter. A tale with many, varied endings of human drama and tragedy - not one rumour is the same, but together it is sorrow that they have in common. Walking the Estate grounds, Westin finds himself amidst a field of heady foxgloves that rise past his knee, and some distance beyond a small copse of trees there lies the remnants of a forgotten, overgrown vineyard.

When the rubble inside the doorway of what appeared to be a mausoleum of a kind is finally cleared at the Spire, Westin Highridge finds him faced with a door made of solid metal ringed with old, round rivets. There is no handle, nor a mechanism he can see. The door is rusted on the surface, and appears to have been hammered directly in, blocking anyone and anything from going in or coming out.

With the information he has gleaned from the locals and being able to view the door, Westin decides on two possible courses of action. Both of course, he will discuss with Lady Artemis as the highest religious authority locally.

First as to the name, Demeter. He hopes that the priestess might have contacts to ask for aid. In addition, he would, if she agreed, make an appointment with the Herald in Sarshal to see if he had any records or contacts for information.

The second would be to contact Master Unger as he is the best known dwarf in the area to Westin. It is with hope that he would have suggestions as to the door and how to open it and if a seal, who might have performed the work.
