The Fear

Postby Toros » Sat Apr 23, 2016 1:17 am

Kelda's bloated corpse washing up onto the beach, face frozen in pain and fear.

Tiny spiders crawling all over, forcing themselves into his mouth and nose and endlessly biting, biting.

A child is born, pale and lifeless. Scarred, deformed except for perfect blue eyes.

A towering horned demon wreathed in flame raises an immense sword and brings it crashing down.

Jerek awakes with a gasp, hand gripping the sword sheathed beside the bed. He shivers, drenched with cold sweat and takes rapid breaths as his eyes dart around the room looking for some unseen threat.

He reaches out with his hand and feels Kelda's warm shoulder, and his breathing steadies and slows. He slips from the bed and walks across the silent room. Jerek kneels on a rough mat and lowers his head, hands resting on his bare thighs.

The Fear was still in him, an icy lump deep in his chest. In time, and with prayer it would melt away... but Jerek hesistated. He had spoken with Kelda of his ability to project an aura of courage, to help his allies resist the terrible presence of the undead.

He did this by focusing on a powerful, positive memory, and letting it expand beyond his body with Ilmater's grace. For Jerek, it was his wedding day.

Jerek focused on the icy sensation in his chest, on the nightmares that were already fading from his memory like mist before the dawn. He embraced it, letting his mind dwell on the panic and fear. It deepened and grew, and the hair on the nape of his neck stood up. For a moment he felt a chill like a winter breeze swirling around him... was it working? A flicker of hope lit in his mind, and suddenly it was over.

A wave of exhaustion slammed into Jerek as the fear faded away. He was close to something.

The first light of dawn began to come in through the window, and Jerek listened to the steady rhythm of Kelda's breathing until he fell asleep.
