The maximum level your character can obtain is 8. While that doesn't have to be the end of their development, it is the end of their XP gain.
Experience comes from three sources.
- Finding new areas, particularly off the beaten trail, grants exploration XP
- Taking part in events and roleplaying with others grants DM XP (unscripted)
- Advancing through dungeons and other dangerous locations grants dungeoneering XP.
For many characters, this constitutes the biggest portion of their XP total. It's a catch-all for many individual activities like killing monsters, dealing with traps and locks, casting effective spells, sneaking around, employing trickery and so forth. It doesn't matter which strategy you choose, as long as it works for your party.
Sometimes that means you're better off avoiding a fight than picking one, because healing supplies cost money. Other times, you're better off clearing a path than taking the chance you'll be trapped when you try to retreat.
Parties which vary wildly in level, as well as particularly large parties, will gain less XP than parties of some 3-5 characters of roughly the same level. Almost all combinations offer reasonable rewards however, so don't feel too restricted.
It may happen that you visit the same area twice in a short period of time. If so, you only get dungeoneering XP the first time around. Your partymembers still get XP as normal.
With only 8 levels to go, we want to help characters pace themselves so they can enjoy both the uncertain early stages and the slightly less uncertain later stages of their careers. That's why each character is given an XP cap which increases automatically over time.
A PC can gain 3000 xp when they're first created, and another 3000 xp each month. This seems to be a good pace with TER's overall XP gain rates, as most characters aren't restricted by this cap.
