Coins, Magic and Work

Postby Loreweaver » Mon Nov 16, 2015 6:01 pm

Instead of using NWN's standard GP system, TER gives each character a number of coin items and a coin pouch to keep them in. While it makes no difference for the classic store interface, exchanges between PCs, dialogue-driven purchases and in-game texts frequently refer to these coins.

There are four of them:
- The copper piece, as the smallest unit, is equivalent to 1 gp in traditional NWN money.
- The silver piece is equivalent to 50 gp
- The gold piece is equivalent to 1000 gp
- The platinum piece is equivalent to 10.000 gp
In other words, 1 pp = 10 gp, 1 gp = 20 sp and 1 sp = 50 cp.

Locally, the copper piece is known as a Sardil or King's Thumb, and carries the face of king Imphras II.
The silver piece is known as a Halanth or Shining Lady, and carries the face of queen Ilmara I.
The gold piece is known as a Balan or Lost Lucky, and carries the face of king Imbrar I.
The platinum piece is known as a Torntar or Founder, and carries the face of king Imphras I.

When interacting with NPCs, only the coins in your coin pouch will be considered as something you're ready to spend. Keeping coin elsewhere in your inventory might mean that certain dialogue options don't show up because you are treated as being too poor to buy a service, even if you're not.

There are a number of temples and manned shrines across Impiltur. These offer some or all of the following restorative spells:
- Cure Critical Wounds
- Restoration
- Neutralize Poison
- Remove Curse
- Revive
- Greater Restoration
- Resurrection

All of these only show up if you have the coin to pay for them, and may have other requirements:
Cure Critical Wounds is only available if you don't have full HP
Restoration is always available, even if you don't need it. In addition to normal effects, it temporarily alleviates attribute loss due to deaths.
Neutralize Poison is available if you are poisoned, diseased or suffered ability point damage. Contrary to what the name suggests, it works against disease too.
Remove Curse is available if you are cursed or have equipped a cursed item. If the latter, you have several seconds after the casting to unequip it.
Revive is available if there's a PC corpse placeable on the floor nearby.
Greater Restoration is always available, even if you don't need it.
Resurrection is available if there's a PC corpse placeable on the floor nearby.

Resting and server resets are also ways to get rid of certain negative effects. They're usually cheaper but have time limitations.

During your travels, you may come upon some unidentified items and wonder what they do.

On TER, magic items can't be identified just by examining the object. This is because the old Lore skill has been removed in favour of a set of Knowledge skills. You can however still pay an appropriate merchant to automatically identify an item for you.

Your other option comes in the form of ID kits. Each item is sensitive to one or more Knowledge skills, and the kit allows you to use your highest appropriate Knowledge skill as your Lore skill. This is then modified as normal by feats like Bardic Knowledge and spells like Identify.

You'll most often use this on scrolls, potions and wands. There are more permanent magic items to be found, but for the typical warrior, just finding a suit of full plate is challenge enough.

"How do I earn this coin?" you might ask.

Traditionally, you'd slit a monster's throat and steal their ill-gained goods back. Your other option is to use the @work voice command.
This provides a steady income as long as your character is logged in and not afk.

It's used any time your character should have income from regular employment, whether it's as city guard, scribe, landlord or dogwalker. While it won't make you rich, it's safe and the amounts earned slowly increase with time and use.
