On Raven's Wings

Gwendolynn stretched her arms behind her, seated at her desk. A simple room at the Sailor's Star, but it did suffice for her purposes. That did not quite make it her desk of course, but it had a small collection of times on it. Some on a neat pile, others opened up at specific bookmarks, with more bookmarks sticking out at different pages. Several scrolls lay before the redheaded arcanist as well, illuminated by the small flicker of the candle. It did not matter much to her that it was late at night, she was used to studying to the early hours of dawn. A small inkwell, already half empty with a quill resting next to it was but one clear sign of Gwendolynn's progress of work that night.

Rising up from her seat, Gwendolynn stretched her legs as well, and flexed her fingers. It would be quite emberassing to explain to her sister how exactly she got those cramps or stiffness in the limbs. The normally serious Serace would crack a grin at those thoughts, surely. Cramp due to sitting too long in one spot. FGGwendolynn shook her head with a small, wry smile of her own, pacing along the room, for some proper circulation of blood in her legs. She had been sitting for serveral hours, she thought. Her gaze fell upon her armour, neatly laid out on her bed for now in favour of a dress that was worn now. The faint, greenish gleen of the adamantine present, due to the candlelight shining upon it. It did feel good to be out of the heavy armour now and then, she admitted to herself.

The spellsword's thoughts, and small break from the studying did not last long. The candle's flame flicked again, as a fluttering sound came down upon the room, through the open window. A raven, it's feathers and coat dark as the night itself. Landing on the desk, it came to a hopping halt, looking at Gwendolynn. It's head canted here and there, and here again, with a single caw to get Gwen's attention. It did not need to, but it likely did so out of habit or simply ensure it was the center of attention, the spellsword had already noted her latenight visitor regardless. Not an unwelcome visitor, if the small smile forming on the mage's lips was to be believed.

"Nala. It has been some time, it is good to see you. You must be tired though, after a flight like that..." The raven confirmed with a caw, familiarity in Gwendolynn's voice as she adressed the animal. It likely did not need to caw, the raven familiar quite likely capable of speech. One of the perks of being bonded to a wizard, but that does not count out the bird simply being a cheeky little thing.
Gwendolynn stepped over to rub a finger along the raven's neck, a gesture it gladly accepted. After the affection to the welcome sight of the bird, she reached to a small case it carried, small enough to not hinder the flight. The letter was simple, to the point, written in a beautiful elven script. A small smile touched the redhead's lips, as she read it quietly.
"Scarlet,
You must have settled in Impiltur by now after these moons. I trust the journey has been well.
How is your sister? I hope her pilgrimage went without trouble and that she reached her destination. I am curious about it.
I heard of a place called Songhall in the region you are at. You must have visited. I would like to learn more of this place too, it must be a place of great interest.
-S.F."
After reading the small note, Gwendolynn looked up to the raven again. She stepp over to arrange a small bowl of water for the raven the animal must have been exhausted. It took quite a journey to find her, after all. Gwen was hardly suprised it did, her teacher had her ways to find the spellsword after all when needed. As the familiar took to wetting it's parched beak. Gwendolynn eyed the note again. Ambiguous as always, but then again.. She herself often joked about the mystery behind wizards. They are a mysterious lot though, aren't they?

The parchment was held to the candle, the tip of the small note held into the flickering flames. Gwendolynn tilted her head to the side ever so slightly as emerald green eyes watched it taking flame. Slowly at first, but that little fire did grow as it worked to consume the paper, hungrily so. Holding it to the last moment before dropping the remain, letting it fully burn up in it's descent towards an empty spot on the desk.Leaving little but ashes in it's wake, the only legacy of it's material existance.

Ambiguous, but it told Gwendolynn enough. It told her what she needed to know and in truth, she was glad... no, happy to hear from her former teacher again. A small smile on her lips as her thoughts wandered, though Gwendolynn allowed her mind just a brief stroll along old memories. A more serious look forming on her features as she glanced to the raven, the animal returning her gaze with it's own.

Work was to be done. On the bright side, a quill and inkwell were already at hand to scribe an immediate response. Wizards, always thinking ahead. Or in this case be caught in a lucky moment, where materials to wite letters were also used for studies. But those are mere semantics.
