Rahve Siegersson - Kelda's Lessons.

Postby Nereida » Tue Nov 08, 2016 11:44 pm

Sunset encroaches upon Sarshel when Rahve reaches the main square. With unwavering gaze she turns southwards, towards a part of the city that she has grown to know well - the city's Triadic Temple. She reaches it just in time to watch the fiery sun be fiery no more, threads of light lingering in the sky, mingling with the rolling clouds until all that is left of the sunset is a chalky mauve that quickly melts away, conceding victory to the stygian darkness that wins and loses daily its battle for the skies. Sequin-silver stars wink down at the young woman while the clouds part, bowing in reverence to the lustrous, argent queen of the night who bathes Sarshel's frigid night with soothing rays of her moonlight.

But her steps do not cease there, taking a turn instead down a narrow alley and up a thin stairway, leading into a narrower passage. The final destination: 8 Monument Court. She knocks twice on the sturdy door, as a few eternal seconds crawl away, the young warrior's pale blue eyes seem to take notice on some of the residence's facade details. Finally, Sister Kelda opens the door, welcoming the young northerner as if she was already expected, promptly inviting her in to a warm cup of tea by the fireside. With just one step of her firm legs, Rahve leaves the frigid night behind, as the sturdy door shuts behind her.

The tea is a simple kind, but warm enough and brewed with care. A generic Cormyran blend, though Rahve is unlikely to recognize the fact--perhaps the household keeps it on account of the Chondathan man-of-the-house, or perhaps the Sister favors the tea for other reasons. It's flowery and almost sweet. A comforting taste.

The not-quite-half-orcish infant is left to watch nearby from her crib as Kelda spreads out some of her old notes. The very edges are beginning to yellow now, and most show other slight signs of wear and tear.

"Raih act felhh sely," Kelda begins with a bow before she takes her seat. The language is a beautiful, alien one: it flows in a way foreign to the more common tongues, with catches of sound and tone that are not immediately obvious. Kelda is not possessed of a naturally beautiful voice, but she has time and much practice with the language, and it flows easily. "This is is how you would greet a stranger, in its simplest form. Hail, and well met. I think we should start by getting you used to the feel of the words on your tongue, and the sight of them in written form."

She spreads out the papers, where the letters are written. "For your purposes, it may be best if we skip or delay learning to write the language--it's complex--tens of thousands of characters--to say nothing of the language itself, which follows patterns of thought and idea that are not natural to our world, but to the celestial. I recommend that you learn to recognize the most important of the pictographs, especially those useful to your purpose. I have a list we can begin with, at least."

Kelda takes a long sip of her tea, studying Egra a while before looking back to Rahve. "Whatever your inclination--and we can always change the plan later--for now, practice speaking the words with me: Raih act felhh sely."

So the first of many lessons begins, with the sounding out of the strange tongue's simplest phrase.

The young blonde warrior nodded as she lifted the cup, bringing it to her lips almost urgently. She needed that warm relief coming down her throat, and being of mostly barbarian origin, measurement and etiquette around food or drink weren't her forté. Still, she managed to not drink it all in a single sip as she put the cup down to watch Kelda as she began with her lessons, sparing a side-glance now and then to the baby nearby.

- "Rect.. falsely." - she attempted to repeat the sounds that were being reproduced for her. Naturally, she spoke the alien words in a way that was more or less familiar to her at first, relating to words she already knew. As Kelda repeated the beautiful words, she tried to pay more attention to them. It wasn't about learning this precise set of words, it was more about grasping the nuances in this outworldly language, the way she should prolong or shorten the syllables, how she should position her lips and tongue to make every sound come out as intended. For Rahve, this was difficult. Despite being a fairly clever woman, at least in her own opinion, old habits die hard, and she had grown with very different ways to pronounce words and terms.

Still, slowly but surely, the progress was there.

- "Reh act fell silly" - Closer, but not quite. Rahve did not give up though, neither she showed symptoms of frustration. She was committed and dedicated to learn and she was no stranger to studying and gaining knowledge. For as long as Kelda kept repeating the words and the concepts, and helping her to get her right, she kept trying.

- "Raih act felh sely" - Then, there, she got it. It was not perfect, even if the words sounded mostly as they should. There were many nuances that she'd gain over time, years perhaps. But at least now, if she spoke that sentence to another being that knew the language, they would understand what she meant.

It was an accomplishment, not because she knew how to speak one sentence in the Celestial tongue, but because that was Celestial, with all of its intricacy and flair, only the first sentence of many, and the bases were being set.

Rahve looked eager for the next lesson.
