The Clinic

Postby Kilaana » Sat Dec 10, 2016 5:56 pm

The congregation outside the great Temple these days was confined to the same few who gathered in the mornings and evenings despite rain or snow. These faithful devout were always clad in their best dress of midnight black; their feathers preened and proud as they waited on the succour that was granted for their patience by residents of the city.

This day, however, seemed different. The ground lit up with a strange green light as the man with the feathered hat strode into the silent promenade. The crows did not fly away, for they were city-dwellers as much as their human counterparts, and were bold enough to stay. The guards on duty had gone to their corners, and the Tormtar that stationed outside the mortuary had retired for the night, for he too needed his rest.

And so, when the man with the feathered hat bent to pick up one of the congregated, it was with a swift hand and an oddly determined look to his eye before he sat down on the pavement and began to smash it a number of times against the cobblestone until it was dead.

None who passed the man tried to stop him as he made his way to the north ward of the city.

When he presented his trophy to Sister Theresa, who worked the night shift outside the Clinic in the docks, she did not know what to say. He offered her a smile, then snapped its head in front of her eyes. Gripped with confusion and fear, the Ilmatari stood frozen in place as the man dripped the bird's blood in a wide circle around the Clinic. By the time Theresa had gathered her wits about her to hail down a passing guard who was completing the last leg of his patrol along the dockside, the man with the feathered hat had gone into the night.

The man stopped to wash his hands in the thawing waters of the dolphin fountain outside the Sailor's Star, and left the dead crow on a bench nearby.

Sister Theresa is soon ushered into the clinic to sip tea by the warm fireplace and tell her story to the Adlers in peace and comfort, while Kelda orders the blood cleaned and sees the defiled street consecrated with holy water.

Catching the sight of the blood in the middle of a stroll through the docks, Merney's business there - whatever it may have been - is brought to a halt by the foreboding scene he bears witness to. Clad in his full battle suit, he casts gauging looks toward Kelda and Teresa both when sighting the two of them entering the Clinic. After aiding in cleaning the streets and disposing of the dead crow, unless instructed to do otherwise, he, too, makes his way inside to learn of the situation at hand - perhaps spurred on by curiosity or simply the want to help.
