Reconsider spell duration

Hi!
Just the other night I, as caster level 4, cast Charm Person upon a NPC. And it worked!
But the duration was a whole 2 whoppin' seconds.
As a level 4 wiz that seems rather short in my opinion. Especially considering the max level is 8.
Now I understand this is low magic and that the use of it should be limited (and I fully agree!), but perhaps there's a few spells of which the duration could be reconsidered?
