Dark depths...

Postby OldGrouch » Thu Feb 28, 2019 1:28 am

Where Sarshel had seen its share of true evil, it seemed they had at last done away with its vile influence and those who exert it, over a year ago. However, where man lives, always some traces remain. And so did it happen to a small group that, as they hid away from Auril's cold influence, one rainy night in the Sailor's Star, their rest was disturbed by a farmer distraught by the loss of his sheep.

As they organized and alerted the guard, they plodded through the darkness, rain and cold, to whatever lay ahead. And of what happened there, details seem about as muddled as the puddles in the road. Some farmers nearby might claim they heard screams, or howling from wolves, some just woke in the middle of the night but their memory a blur.

Regardless, the adventurers did away with whatever madness had arisen, it seemed. As just after midnight, all the farmlands north-west of Sarshel went deathly silent, as if even the rain had stopped falling in horror... or respect for the fallen.

By morning, the guards had been alerted of the events that night, the well hastily covered up with a warning not to use its water, and the rain had resumed to cleanse and wash away whatever tainted memories remained.

Lana leaves an envelop for Artemis D'Assanthe on her door

Dawnmistress, I need your wisdom, your knowledge and your consul. I have been witness to a series of distubing events as winter as of late. It began three weeks ago when I encountered a creature called an imp in an abandoned house just off the old quater, apparently imp's are devilish creatures sometimes bound by evil mages.

That was followed by the harsh turn in the weather and the influx of Theskan refugees. The beds are full at the Illmatari shelter and twice I have seen lightning strike at Lord Sarshel's statue in Founders Square.

Then just days ago a small boy was brought into the shelter running a fever and breathing fast. Yet all attempts at healing magic have burned his skin like magical fire.

Finally last night just outside the walls in the eastern farms some kind of foul thing birthed from another plane climbed out of the community well and savagely killed a shepard and a half dozen of his flock.

Thanks to the efforts of a Northman mercenary the well sprung devil was slain.
Surely his presence there was a gift from the Morninglord.

I am hoping to identify what this creature was, where it came from, and what to do about it.

Lana Millner, Dawnbringer

Take the way to Outentown.

They never should have listened, but something as simple as greed and curiosity can make one walk a long path. Theirs proved to be longer than they bargained for.

"A merchant connection for a lute?" He nods to the hooded figure, "Take it from an Amnian. That can be quite a good deal if you play your cards right."

Then Over the Hill.

A huge hound, much bigger than any domestic canine you have ever seen, stands guard over a battered wooden gate. Behind it, you can see patches of wilted black grass jutting around the forlorn and overgrown pave stones leading to the small cottage's doorway.

The dog was not a distraction, it was a warning and a guard. A warning to keep people from going in, to their death, even if it had to attack them. And a guard, to keep the incarnation of evil inside, from leaving.

"Cursed... -That- is why I'm a cat-person."

And Past the Wood.

You remember the stench.

There was no help to be found. It was night by the time they'd arrived, any travel that would normally pass by the house had ceased and there were no neighbours within several miles.

"At the well, something smelled like this. Whatever came out was not a hag, it wasn't even of this..."

And Into the Path.

IT was identical. It -is- identical...

At the darkest of night, sometimes there isn't any help. And one has to make the call, to fight or flee, and neither is the right answer. But a call has to be made, because at some point, evil will make it for you.

"Your friend Badger is a thief and a fraud, but at this point I'll take all the help we can get."

And Over the Hill.

"Shouldn't have killed the damned dog..." he whispers, the floating blade next to him trembling to be let loose as if set on a crossbow.

The creature was a source for nightmares, a stunted, corrupt form made out of scaly green flesh, putrid and oozing with warts and acidic pustulence. Eyes blind, bright yellow yet borne upon them with the hatred of a thousand worlds and eras. It howled as steel, fire, magic and holy water stung at its form, but even after what seemed a night of battle, it perished and turned into bile.

And at a Bend and Nook, there you will find her!

At sunrise, the next day, Yago, having parted ways with Eshani and Nyvarra, returns to Sarshel. His clothes torn from claw- and bitemarks, his expression dour, as he immediately heads for the clergy and speaks with them about the event at the well. Leaving, he parts with a small vial filled with bile and instructions to compare notes with the other vial that had been left before. The guards are alerted and guided to the tainted house.

A small detail of Warswords, including a Warmace of the Impiltur, attends the small farm house soon after. A forlorn, grim-looking old peasant woman can be seen discussing with them at great length, any passerbys ushered away by implacable glares and not-too-gentle pushes alike.

"Move, such is the order of the Queen's own.", they bark.

For several days, Lori gets to work on the vial of remains of the creture from the well which Lana had given her. Delving into alchemy notes and tomes, a method is uncovered which claims to enable the determination of planar origins - ten pages worth of tiny handwriting, some almost so small that a magnifying lens is needed to make out the words and formulae. "Of The Determination of Cosmic Origins" penned by the selfstyled Master of Fermentation and Conjugatory Studies Issac Oxalis of Procampur was hardly destined for the bestseller lists of Impiltur. Oxalis himself had lived and died some hundred years ago, leaving little trace of himself other than his alchemy studies, which in spite of their apparent comprehensiveness, had the annoying habit of drifting to vagueness at what seemed the most crucial point of the experimental procedure. Whether this was deliberate, or he had written more than he should while sampling fermentation, was unkown, but the otherwise obscure alchemist had his little slice of immortality in those pages, and his methods usually more or less worked in the end. The sample would be subjected to a seemingly endless combination of various alchemy essences, under different conditions and a variety of reactions. The alchemy combined with Lori's own divination spells and knowledge were the best shot she had of seeing if the label "daemon" was a fitting one in this case.

Some few days later, having heard rumor nor report of the warswords, Yago decides to go on an investigation for himself. He tries to speak with the warswords, or at least the one he initially reported the events at the house to. If that served to be no help, he would try and put his personality to work and try to pry something from the soldiers at whatever dive they wind up after duty.

((Replied ICly to Lori's inquiry.))

It is a lazy morning that finds Yago near the Warsword Barracks, inquiring about the recent events on the farm house. His inquiries are met with a stony wall of silence. A low-ranking officer, full of warts and frowns, threatens Yago with outright arrest should he bother the authorities again "without relevant instructions".
