Call to Arms - The End Of The 7th

Postby Obsidian Sea » Sun Dec 18, 2016 6:58 pm

The sky is lit by lightning. Silver pulses occasionally in the clouds, and is gone again. The scent of sulfur slowly seems to cascade over the tops of conifers and the fringe vegetation that trails the Laviguer Road. A strange experience, unimaginable to the mortal mind, seems to take place up in the clouds where Air Elementals dance their jigs.

But it is not to last. Eventually, the clouds seem like nothing more than smoke; the fog that settles over a battlefield as a conflict ends. The Daemon that once erupted from Sarshel is destined there to return again, and though the city prepares itself for the battle, much of The Most Holy Order is displaced the length of the Laviguer and Prince's Roads. The Daemon has taken flight from Laviguer, defeated by Impiltur's mightiest but not yet destroyed. It seems inevitable that it shall come again, and though people pray it is to be the entity's demise. Weapons are raised; defenses strengthened. A collision of refugees from Laviguer and evacuees locks the situation. It is time for the city to stand its ground, and turn its attention towards a true terror in glorious and frightened defiance.

It must be hoped that the Daemon will be weakened severely by its recent conflicts in Laviguer and the sky, but the battle ahead has no guarantee of victory. Lives may be lost and lost forever in the battle soon to come. It won't be long now. And one way or another, it will be the end of something great: and the beginning of something else entirely...

//OOC: Hoping to do this at 8.30pm GMT, tonight! It is very short notice, I regret, but I shall tap all our channels to get the word around. As this is the last day before Christmas that can conceivably work for an American and European player base collectively, I erred belatedly to the decision that it would be more fair to try for tonight than close off the prospect of the narrative altogether for a big part of the community.

On an unusual occasion at an unusual hour, noon, two figures figures entered the city square. They were a stark contrast to each other: one cloaked in somber grey and austere red, the other in the fine colors of dawn. Once little more than foreigners, now friends and priestesses in their own right, Sister Kelda Adler and High Dawnlord Artemis D'Assanthe join together to address the people of Sarshel.

“Dear attendants,” the Lathanderite began,

“Dear attendants,” said the Ilmatari alongside her friend.

“At dawn you gather to greet the morning and hear the words of the Morninglord; at dusk the soothing touch of the Crying God welcomes you. At highsun, may they share their true power with you all: the power of unity, endurance and hope combined.

“You will have seen the heart of Sarshel, the Temple of the Triad, and will have thought about it in loss, pain... some of you, many of you in terror. For you know what has come forth from it, the scars it had left behind, and what is approaching. You know it; and we remember it. We fought a great evil back in that day and although we lived to see the Morninglord’s sun, many did not. And still a pale new morning rose, defiant, and we carried on. And not in vain. We have known defeat, but we will know victory tomorrow - we already have known many!”

Kelda steps forward, alongside Artemis, and raises her voice to those who might gather:

“In Filur, I watched as the death of demons loosened winter’s grip. Now I ask you to look around you. Is the cold not lessened, lately? Has the snow and ice not begun to turn to rain and mud? Far from Sarshel, in the mountains to our north, four of of Impiltur’s own fought against what might seem insurmountable odds: a great demon of ice and snow at the heart of a fierce winter storm. They scaled icy cliffsides and braved the mountain’s worst to fell the demon, and with its death, the storm abated. And now the winter falters again.

Ilmater’s blessed and their allies--my dear friends the elves by the name of Kallian and Celith, my own Alorn Jerek of Ilmater, my dear friend Anton of Ilmater--are to thank for this most recent advancement. So many more are to thank for their brave acts that have gotten us this far, and that will carry us further. All of Impiltur is standing together and rising together, and step by step, we are pushing back--and winning.”

Sister Kelda looks to Artemis at this. “Today, we will push back harder once again.”

Artemis speaks. "For after every night, no matter its length, a new day comes. We have persevered through a year full of hardship and tragedy - a year, a full year, of winter. It will abate, and the evil that has come with it - the Fiend - will meet its end! It will perish and make way for spring! You have seen it and heard it now, how it already has begun, and not only through the gods' mercy or the Frostmaiden's thaw - but through us, you, and other brave souls. Brave men and women who have seen the winter's eye. The wounds upon Impiltur will know relief, and we will heal them. The Enemy will try to descend upon Impiltur, return to where it entered our realm. Let it! May it! We will slay it!"

Kelda finishes the sermon, saying, “Sarshel has been too long blighted by the memory of the demons which entered our world at the Triadic Temple. For too many months have we let this wound fester, let it dampen our resolve and rob us of our dignity. Today, Ilmater will fight back. Lathander will fight back. The Triad will fight back. I ask of all of you: pray. The gods are listening, so long as we stand strong together.”

Victory

There should have been tall banners whipping in the wind.

Proud trumpets ringing out their victory.

There should have been people cheering and dancing in the streets.

Had they not won?

It was silent as Artemis D'Assanthe walked the cobblestones, her ceremonial robes unblemished and shining in the early morning; a stark contrast with the dirty, grey, brown and white city around her. There were some rubble, scorchmarks and dark blots to be spotted that must have been blood.

Her footwear clicked through the south district, passing by the battered front of the Temple of the Triad. The columns that held the roof were majestic even in their festering, cracked form. Soon, they would know release from the last vestiges of the curse that lay behind them.

She passed an archway that had been shattered as if it had been nothing more than half a year ago, since then rebuilt. It had known suffering and hope crumbling, like the city's people, yet it had been mended also, and tomorrow it might be restored further.

The elven-blooded Lathanderite saw the high, pointy roofs behind whose stones the city square hid. Here, she halted.

No one was out in the streets. In the soundless morning, some pebble fell from a nearby afflicted building. The priestess thought to have heard the wind's howl rushing through the city gates, but no one had dared to exit their boarded-up homes yet. She and others would not let them remain hiding away in fear for long; peace would return.

Artemis began to walk again and entered the city square; the first thing anyone entering Sarshel would have seen. The torn-up cobbles, the marks of black soot, mud, snow, and blood; sinking into the stones all around. Their blood, hers, her allies', the Enemy's.

She stood where she had always stood for her morning sermons, a glance offered to the Royal Palace grounds that, too, had known a savage battle. Now, they knew a rising sun of pink, red and pale gold - a pale winter sun still obeying a pale winter sky's palette.

But it would be brighter the next day.

Today, the morning after the Daemon Prince's arrival and defeat, Artemis D'Assanthe would do her best to praise the allies that had fought so valiantly; to commemorate the heroes and victims that had to know death before victory came; to rally others to help comfort and lift each other up. Though the domain of true suffering and healing it was Ilmater's, the Lathanderite offered her blessings of the morning to anyone that had been injured or overwhelmed, too.

Since the battle, the Cormyrean Spellsword Gwendolynn Highblade has not been seen or spotted in the city. Where one might have expected the magus to be present to help in the aftermath with her magic, or to share her particular sense of with to lighten spirits, one might be left dissapointed.

Gwendolynn did not dissapear without leaving a trail in her passing however, though the trail would come in the form of rumours and hearsay from some of the locals. The spellsword apparantly hired a horse and wagon for a long journey, and some guards may have seen her depart in the night after the fight with the Deamon Prince. The wagon was used to transport the body of the fallen priestess Serace Highblade. Where to is left to educated guesses and speculation, though to the people who knew the Highblade sisters it may be likely that Gwendolynn is undertaking the journey back home to Cormyr, to have her sister receive a proper burial with her family.

Though she survived the wound to her head during the battle, and recovered enough to fight on, Sister Kelda of Ilmater has let those of her congregation and fellow clergy know that she must take some time to rest and recuperate from her injury. Idleness doesn't suit her, however, and her recovery is perhaps slowed by her insistence on continuing the Broken God's work. Rest will have to be taken when it can be had.

For those who might find themselves without homes in the wake of the destruction, she works with her fellow clergy to organize shelter and bolster Sister Cassandra's efforts with the soup kitchen. In her sermons, she speaks of the incredible power the city has thrown off its back; she speaks of the debt the city owes its dead and wounded. She praises the natives and the Theskans and urges them to come together to rebuild the city. She speaks of Ilmater, Lathander, and Sune--and of how the Triadic Temple will be restored once again, and the city fully restored. She reminds all of how the half-orc Edthin of Tyr lifted their spirits and how they remembered their dignity, and how the people of Sarshel must remember their own strength.

And then she collapses in her own bed, exhausted and awaiting the healing that will soon make her head stop pounding.

Initially Fenneken spends much of her time in the abandoned Sailor's Star. Several of the wine and liquuor bottles are emptied. Some company she welcomes and some she does not pay attention to. To frequent visitors it may seem like random behaviour. Oftentimes the sorceress simply sits by herself in the eerily dark and abandoned inn. At night she only allows herself a few hours to lie down in a bed in one of the rooms. The sleep she gets is not without nightmares. After a few nights she walks outside of the city gates to an unknown destination.
